Pietro Paolo Rubens published the first volume of Ancient Palazzi of Genoa in 1622. It included 12 local buildings depicted in 72 plates illustrating elevations, plans and sections. Given the success of the work, the second volume of Modern Palazzi appeared in 1652 with 19 palazzi represented in 57 large scale plates. Later editions always combined the the two editions in one volume, which become more and more sought after by European collectors and experts.
